Alaina Ladner '99

Vice President, Sustainability, JLL

An OLP graduate in 1999, I studied architecture in Boulder at the University of Colorado and again at the University of Oregon in Eugene. I took time getting started with my professional career, several times scraping funds together for life changing backpacking trips during my mid 20s and once more at 33. I fulfilled a longtime dream of living in San Francisco when I took a junior designer role in an interiors firm primarily delivering office space, not necessarily where I thought my career was headed. But I grew to love designing offices, maybe because I understood these were the spaces that people spend the majority of their time (how different today!). I was afforded a fantastic perspective on the real estate industry, working for both the Landlords and Tenants through the 2010s Tech Boom in the Bay Area. Over time, my passion for design's impact on people began to focus more on the impact to the environment. I felt a deep responsibility to connect these personal passions and work on fundamental changes necessary for the commercial real estate industry. Through intentional networking, self-directed education and outspoken advocacy within my firm, I was able to orient my work towards sustainable design. One of the mentors I gained through my pursuit of a sustainability career was a leader within one of the world's largest commercial real estate companies. She encouraged me to write my own job description and, in the fall of 2020, I began my current role leading a sustainability consulting practice focused on commercial real estate. I have the privilege to work from home in Ocean Beach where I live with my husband and 2 daughters.
